The summer markets begin this weekend!

2017-CAD- Fe Laan by Josh Asselstine - 72-lo resThis is most definitely one of my favourite times of year…the summer farmers market near my home opens this weekend. While I adore the winter market that is located just down the hill from where I live (especially for picking up special gifts for the holiday season!), the summer ones have a very special energy. They’re bursting with people, farmers and a variety of produce – and the sun always seems to be shining. Even the fruits and veggies seem more chipper!

My Sunday morning farmers market shop

IMG_8305It’s not often enough that something you absolutely love also happens to be good for you, your community and the planet. For me, that “thing” is shopping at the farmers market.

It’s become a ritual in our home. Every Sunday morning, my husband and I grab our shopping bags and head out to the Coquitlam Farmers Market to get a week’s supply of the freshest fruits, vegetables, bread, honey and eggs.

For those of you who read my posts or follow along on social media, you’ve probably noticed I’m a big advocate for shopping at the farmers market. Why again? Here’s a recap…

Sunday night supper: Kookoo Sabzi

Natasha Asselstine Nutrition | Kookoo Sabzi

For the past year, I’ve got into the habit of preparing specific meals on specific days of the week. I find it helps me stay organized, requires less thinking on the spot, and keeps my favourite meals on constant rotation.

On Mondays, I make a big pot of our favourite lentil stew (a version of this) so it’s something I can easily warm up from the fridge in a pinch. On Saturdays, we often pull out a recipe book and make something new.

Since Spring, I’ve been making kookoo sabzi (like a Persian-style frittata) every Sunday night. It’s the perfect light and delicious meal that’s super simple to make, so there isn’t much fussing during the last few hours we have left of the weekend.

My summer berry smoothie (or frozen yoghurt)

Natasha Asselstine Nutrition | Summer Berry Smoothie or Frozen YoghurtWhen I was younger, my mom, sister and I would go shopping and get super excited about having frozen yoghurt as a “healthy” treat from the food court. I absolutely loved it, but now learning about how much sugar and chemicals are in there, I definitely don’t consider it to be a healthy option anymore.

So when I accidentally made a smoothie that tasted just like these frozen yoghurts, I went nuts! It was so reminiscent of the taste that I immediately jotted down my recipe and am sharing it with you here.

Hey everyone! I’m so excited (once again) to be unveiling a project that I’ve been super eager to launch. I’ve created another product to encourage living in harmony with the seasons. It is the 2017 West Coast Cleanse and it is designed for those of us living in and around Metro Vancouver.

January is coming up soon and is a very popular time to cleanse, given that we often overindulge over the holiday season, which leaves us feeling heavy, groggy and in the need of an extreme fix! But doing it incorrectly during the dead of winter can be harsh on our systems.

I have designed the 2017 West Coast Cleanse for people to gain the benefits of cleansing while also staying in harmony with the seasons!

Cleansing is an important practice for overall wellness. Our eliminatory organs (the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin and bowels) must get rid of environmental toxins as well as harmful chemicals produced internally as a byproduct of some metabolic processes.

I’d say that it’s now, more than ever before, important to take the time to cleanse the body. Here’s why:
